New York State Honors John Coltrane’s Centennial

  • April 26, 2026
    • The New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate passed a legislative resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Coltrane, recognizing him as a renowned artistic trailblazer and innovative New York jazz musician.
    • Sponsored by Senators Cordell Cleare and Jamaal Bailey, along with Assemblymember Jordan J.G. Wright, Resolution J1845 passed unanimously in both chambers.
    • “Thank you, New York, for this great honor and recognition of the work and contributions of John Coltrane. New York played such a special role in his life and career. This resolution will be a permanent fixture of the collection at the John and Alice Coltrane Home—site of the definitive Coltrane collection—and we encourage all to visit that cultural and educational landmark. We thank Senators Cordell Cleare and Jamaal Bailey, and Assemblymember Jordan J.G. Wright.”

Alice Coltrane Devotional Album to See Release in Newly Stripped-Down Form

Originally released in 1982 as a private-press cassette, Turiya Sings will see wide release this summer, sans overdubs

Alice Coltrane’s early solo work has made her an icon on par with her husband and collaborator, John — last year, her 1971 LP Journey in Satchidananda earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list. But around 20 years’ worth of her musical output, dating from the time when she devoted herself to Hinduism and founded an ashram in California, still remains obscure. An upcoming release, Kirtan: Turiya Sings, will offer a fresh look at one exemplary album from this period.

No one knows that better than Michele Coltrane. The only daughter of jazz giants John and Alice Coltrane. She was born into an iconoclastic musical dynasty whose impact is likely to linger as long as there are artists willing to push the boundaries. Yet, to her credit she’s ventured out and built an impressive career in her own right, working in radio, and as a performer, composer and impresario.
