Vocalist Michelle Coltrane was born in Paris France, and is the only daughter of Alice and John Coltrane. She presently resides in Los Angeles CA. She is the Executive Director and President of the John and Alice Coltrane Foundation.


While living in Japan, Michelle worked as a DJ at Eddie’s R&B Club. Later that year she performed and arranged background vocals for prominent artists. Eventually finding work for voice overs, she was the featured vocalist for two Chevrolet commercials. Her own band performed regularly at the infamous Officers Club in Tokyo. Before returning to the U.S, she composed the theme song “Color the Night” which was featured at Space World Amusement Park.


Her first CD was released in 1994. “I THINK OF YOU” a collaboration with musician and composer Scott Hiltzik which produced a blend of classic and contemporary Jazz. "The Jazz Times" noted the recording to be deeply rooted in the Jazz tradition. The recording was well received and a YES award was won and presented by Blues artist Barbara Morrison. Michelle went on a promotional tour in the U.S and France performing compositions from the Album. Michelle’s performances include shows with these artists : The McCoy Tyner Trio at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Watts, Ronnie Laws, Billy Childs, Jack DeJohnette , Marvin Smitty Smith, Reggie Workman and the R&B Group The Gap Band. Studied Performing Arts at Pierce College Los Angeles, CA 1990-1992. 

Michelle also honed her skills as an Emcee to the John Coltrane Scholarship event at the Wiltern Theatre and The House of Blues in Los Angeles. During the late 1990’s Michelle co-hosted a radio program on 90.7 FM for 5 years, “Straight No Chaser” with Maggie Le Pique, interviewing artists such as Charlie Haden, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Stanley Clarke, and many others. Michelle Coltrane is currently concertizing across the USA as well as worldwide having been a featured performer at the 2013 Panama Jazz Festival. A few of her recent appearances in the U.S. include shows at The John Ford Anson Amphitheater in Los Angeles, CA, Chef Mac's in Baltimore, MD as well as regular engagements at Pips on LaBrea in Hollywood, CA, and H.O.M.E. and Bar 1912 in Beverly Hills, CA.

Her current project is a collaboration with guitarist Shea Welsh, whom is also the musical director for the band. Michelle and Shea are writing new material, and arranging new and classic standards to create the bands unique modern/retro sound. They are currently in the studio recording material for Michelle's second CD which is scheduled for release in early 2014. The band is comprised of LA’s finest musicians including: Nedra Wheeler, Ryan Cross, Tim Lefebvre, Cameron Graves, Mahesh Balasooriya, Ralph Penland and Kamasi Washington.
